We’re Getting Smarter Answers — and Dumber by the Day

Welcome to comprehension debt

Last month I caught up with an old college friend who teaches at one of the IITs. Something he said has stayed with me since.

“My students have never submitted better work,” he told me, “and they have never understood it less.”

He described a pattern he sees every semester now. A student turns in a beautifully structured assignment and then, in the viva, he asks one follow-up question.

Why did you choose this approach? What happens if we change this one condition?

And the confidence just evaporates. The student is not lazy or dishonest or dishonest in anyway, Its just that the work got finished without the understanding ever actually forming.

The answer was there but the learning wasn’t.

He calls this gap borrowed comprehension.

I’d push it a step further and call it comprehension debt, because like most debt, it compounds quietly until the payment comes due.

The debt shows up everywhere once you start looking

A few weeks after that conversation, I came across a LinkedIn post by a Gen Z professional. It had a lot of comments and interactions.

The gist of it is that: I used to feel sharp. I could hold an entire problem in my head. Now I can get anything done in minutes, but I don’t feel like I’ve learned anything in a year. I feel faster and duller at the same time.

Faster and duller at the same time. That’s comprehension debt in one sentence.

You start noticing it in small, ordinary moments once someone points it out. The student who’s “completed” four online courses this year and still can’t explain the core idea of any of them without opening a tab. The junior developer who ships features daily but freezes the moment the framework updates. The learner stuck watching the same concept explained a third and fourth time on different platforms, because none of those platforms has any idea what they know.

This isn’t a discipline problem, and it isn’t really the learner’s fault. Every generation has taken shortcuts where it could. What’s different now is that our tools have gotten extraordinarily good at producing finished output, while our learning systems haven’t changed at all in how they verify or carry forward actual understanding.

Answers now travel at the speed of light. Comprehension still travels at the speed of a human brain, forming slowly. The debt lives in that gap.

Why our learning systems keep issuing this debt

Think about how a motivated learner actually moves through the world today: a lecture on one platform, practice problems on another, an AI assistant for the parts that don’t make sense, a different course entirely next semester.

Each tool is fine on its own. Put together, they’re amnesiac.

None of them knows what the learner has already mastered, where they got stuck last month, which explanation finally made it click, or which misconception keeps resurfacing in their mistakes. So each tool does the only thing it can: it starts over. It reteaches what the learner already knows, skips past what they don’t, and calls it progress because the course bar hit 100%.

When nothing carries forward from one tool to the next, the shortcut becomes the obviously rational choice. At this point, Comprehension debt is bascially a predictable output of a fragmented learning system.

A recent report from a workshop convened at Stanford HAI, with the Gates Foundation, Mozilla Foundation, and AWS, gets at exactly this. Learning is a long process, the report argues, but the technology built around it is optimized for short, isolated sessions inside single platforms. A learner’s goals, prior knowledge, progress, even the errors they tend to repeat, none of it reliably survives the move from one tool to the next. Personalization resets every time. The learners who move between the most programs and platforms end up paying the highest price for it.

Their proposed fix is a fairly simple idea: give every learner a portable, persistent record of their own learning, one they control, that travels with them, and that any tool can build on.

Paying down the debt takes continuity, not willpower

I’ve spent years designing learning experiences, and I’ve landed on something a little unfashionable: we’re not going to lecture our way out of this. Telling learners to “use AI tools responsibly” is a bit like telling someone to spend responsibly while handing them a credit card with no statement, ever.

What actually works, for financial debt and for this kind of debt, is the same thing: visibility and continuity.

Visibility means the learner can see, for themselves, what they’ve genuinely mastered versus what they’ve merely completed, real understanding, checked honestly, one concept at a time, not just a completion badge.

Continuity means that record follows them. Verify understanding once, and let it be remembered everywhere, and a few things start to happen. Learners stop burning hours re-covering ground they’ve already crossed. Gaps get caught early, while they’re still cheap to fix, instead of surfacing in the viva, the interview, or the first week of a job. And the shortcut loses some of its appeal, because the system keeps quietly asking the same question my friend asks in his viva: do you actually understand this yet?

That’s the hopeful part of all this. Comprehension debt is a gap in infrastructure. And infrastructure gaps can be closed.

A small step in that direction

This belief is what we’re building toward at Learner State, an open-source effort to give every learner a portable knowledge state of their own: a simple, honest record of what they truly understand, owned by them and not by any platform. The idea is modest but stubborn: verify understanding one concept at a time, and let that record travel with the learner across every tool, course, and platform they touch. We don’t have all the answers yet; the schema, the verification model, the interoperability, and much of it is still being worked out in the open, and we’d rather build it with educators and learners than for them. But the direction feels right: a world where learning stops resetting to zero, and comprehension finally gets to compound the way the debt currently does.

Because at the end of the day, the learner does not need more content, tools, or motivation for discipline. They need their learning to be remembered and platform-agnostic, acting as a passport for them.
